TikTok tests search feature to highlight keywords in comments

It looks like TikTok is gearing up to position itself as an even bigger threat to Google. The short-form app is currently testing a new search function to highlight keywords in comments and links to search results for the term.

The test comes after a discussion around TikTok serving as a search engine for Google surfaced online. Google even reported that nearly 40% of Gen Z prefer using TikTok and Instagram for search.

Since launching, TikTok’s search function has proven to be successful, partly due to its visual nature. The videos that appear in the results offer both functional and viral content that is more engaging - compared to Google’s text-based listings.

The new keyword test feature may be a useful tool for creators on the platform. Using popular keywords in their posts could help their content rank higher and reach more viewers.

While there’s no word on when exactly the feature will be available for all users on the app, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the platform makes the update in the upcoming weeks.
