Rating Met Gala outfits

On the first Monday in May, celebrities, influencers, and fashionistas gather for the annual haute couture fundraising event at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in Manhattan. As these fashion icons climb the Met Museum steps, pop culture–obsessed creators are at home refreshing their social feeds, ready to rate every look.

Pop culture commentary is a major content pillar on TikTok. The app’s fast pace and the norm of uploading unpolished, real-time content make it the perfect space for instant reactions.

This year’s dress code, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” sparked commentary from creators analyzing whether celebrities followed the theme, or looked more super sweet sixteen than superfine.

One humorous trend saw creators filming themselves from bed in their pajamas, laughing at the irony of them critiquing fashion while dressed in a tortilla onesie.

Of course, influencer icon Emma Chamberlain was back at the Met Gala this year as Vogue’s social host. Emma has been hosting Vogue’s Met Gala livestream on YouTube since 2021, and despite debate as to whether influencers belong at the event, Emma’s humor, love for fashion, and large, engaged audience make her the perfect social host.

How much did I cost?

Pet content on social media never fails to pull at viewers’ heartstrings. Pet owners see their furry friends as family and love showing off their pets’ quirks and cuteness to thousands, or even millions, of online fans.

A new trend, “How much did I cost?”, has been gaining traction on the FYP this week. In this trend, creators post an adorable photo of their dog with the text “How much did I cost?” overlaid. They then share a funny or unexpected story about how they acquired their pet, finishing with a final slide that features a photo of the pet leaning into a humorous element from the story.

One creator, @mitchmyers, shared that he got a 25% discount on his sweet puppy. The post shows the dog asking, “Why?” – then reveals that the pup has only three legs. The comment section quickly filled with love, as fellow pet lovers commented on how adorable the dog is and shared their own unconventional stories of pet adoption.

Tracy Beaker is in her influencer era

Actress Dani Harmer, who played the iconic main character on CBBC show “The Story of Tracy Beaker” from 2002 to 2005, has delighted her now-grown-up fans by creating a TikTok account. The prime fans of the UK children's TV show sit in the late Gen Z-early Millennial category, making TikTok the perfect place for the star to connect with and spark nostalgic memories amongst Tracy Beaker enthusiasts.

Dani’s first TikTok video has achieved upwards of 6 million views, and the comments are full of fans referencing moments from the television series and begging to see more of Dani’s life now. Thanks to drumming up so much excitement, the actress is now posting regular day-in-the-life videos and answering FAQs about her time on television that we’re all dying to know.

To honor “Tracy Beaker's” TikTok debut, creators are making videos to attract the attention of Dani Harmer. Lots of iconic clips from the show are popping up on the FYP, and one creator, @naileditbychelsy, posted the incredible Tracy Beaker nail art she created to “Welcome Dani Harmer to TikTok”.

The buzz around Dani’s TikTok debut is proof that TV stars and celebrities who were popular more than two decades ago can reconnect with their longstanding audiences thanks to social media.
